Taylor Fontaine, URI student, disqualified from US Open qualifier - Non Conforming Grooves!

Taylor Fontaine, one of the University of Rhode Island's star athletes, had played a great round of golf on Tuesday at Newport Country Club. He was now set to move onto the sectionals and try to earn a coveted spot in the US Open in June, until he was disqualified for using a non-conforming Titlelist Vokey wedge.

A fellow competitor in the field, Ron Dellostritto, Weathersfield CC, mentioned that the wedge may not be conforming. Rules officials were called in, and Fontaine was disqualified. According to Ron Sirak of Golf World, Fontaine thought he may have had a non-conforming club, but was convinced by a friend that it was ok.

I hate to see players play great and then lose their opportunity to advance, but the rules are there for a reason. They keep the game fair. Although some of the rules don't make much sense, this one has been talked about and fine tuned for almost a year now, especially at the professional level.

Taylor Fontaine is a very talented player and he will have many more opportunities to advance in the next few years! Congrats to all the qualifiers!
